Angela and Kevin’s Calamigos Ranch Oak Room wedding was the perfect marriage of a formal soiree and a rustic vintage vibe. Angela and Kevin’s love story is filled with adventure, romance, and lots of whimsy. This couple met in Los Angeles so it’s no surprise that they share a strong love of tv shows, trips to the beach, and Disneyland! In fact, one of Angela’s favorite spots in all of Disneyland is The Wishing Well in Snow White’s Grotto. So when Kevin got down on one knee after she made a wish on one of their regular park visits it was an easy “Yes”! From there the planning began.
Originally I started working with Angela and Kevin to plan a December 2020 wedding. But you can guess what happened that year! Thankfully, their vendor team was so understanding and professional. We all worked together to find a new date that would allow the couple to celebrate (hopefully sans intense COVID protocols) with their loved ones. When we rescheduled for December 2021, this gave the couple more time to save money. Ultimately helping them make wise investments that would bring both them and their guest’s joy on the wedding day.
For their outdoor wedding ceremony, the couple knew they wanted to highlight the natural elements already found in the venue. The curated garden landscape along the winding entrance path, the canopy of trees overhead strung with lights and chandeliers, and the stunning waterfall backdrop all got their time to shine.
While we didn’t need to add much additional decor outdoors, the couple had a very specific vision for their indoor Calamigos Ranch Oak Room wedding reception. To create the classic and upscale wedding aesthetic the couple desired, we focused on black and gold for a chic color palette base. By utilizing black linens on the tables, instead of the traditional white, the Oak Room transformed into a black-tie formal space that had guests feeling like they were at an evening soiree.
With the event so close to Christmas, the couple chose to veer away from the typical red & green color scheme. Instead, we used greenery to tie in a beautiful jewel-toned color palette. Bright fuchsia, deep purples, and vibrant burgundy blossomed from the arrangements. Styling them with gold table accents really brought a lively, warm tone to the rustic vibe of the Calamigos Oak Room.
To add in floral and spacial variety, we opted for both high centerpieces on stands and some low directly on the table. The couple chose unique personal accents like individual maple syrup favors in honor of where the bride grew up in New England, a Disneyland-themed Fast Pass escort card display, and personalized menus welcoming each guest to dinner.
The feeling of the wedding day was a mixture of joyous anticipation (as the couple, friends, and family had waited a whole extra year to celebrate together) and grounded love. Just seeing Angela and Kevin laughing with their friends, hugging family members, and wiping away tears as they let themselves slide smoothly into each intentional moment – the wait was absolutely worth it!
One unique choice the couple made was having a close friend who is in the music industry perform their First Dance song. As a wedding planner, I’ve seen many first dances. And while they are all beautiful, this one took my breath away. Everyone in the room was silent and fully focused taking in the moment as they listened to Darren croon away singing “I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons)” while the couple held each other close. That was truly magical!
Working together with the couple to plan out their wedding day aesthetic was not only fun, but it also opened me up to some new elements of design. From stationery wording and layout. To floral colors and arrangement styles. And the intentional moments of connection found in the table settings. Angela and Kevin put so much thought into their wedding vision. And they put a lot of trust in me!
I’m so thankful for the times they reached out with questions regarding how to word COVID protocols, where they should rent their linens from, and how to choose the best frosting type for their wedding cake. We were able to explore so many possibilities. And ultimately found the best options that not only balanced their desires with the wedding day needs, but also balanced their budget with their reality.
“Kindred Weddings and Events was essential. Absolutely essential. We had no idea what to do multiple times during the planning stages of our wedding. Whether it was making choices of vendors, postponing due to the pandemic, or how to make sure that all our guests are safe and comfortable in a post-pandemic wedding. Yet Sarah was always there for us. She was patient, calm, organized, and ready to guide us through the minefield of planning what turned out to be the greatest day of our lives.
The wedding itself went so smooth, and the reception was a fun-filled romp that we didn’t want to end. All of this can be attributed to Sarah and her team, ready to solve a problem or jump in if we needed them. Thank you so much, Sarah, for helping us pull off a miracle, our miracle. Our guests are still telling us how much fun they had! And so did we. Thank you.”
