Lily and Jim celebrated their union with a whimsical, colorful Fig House wedding in the fall. These two, while introverted in nature, allowed their love story to take center stage with unique details that had their guests saying “That is so Lily and Jim”! Finding inspiration for a unique and one-of-a-kind wedding can be harder than it looks. So I asked Lily and Jim all about how they brought personality and pizazz to their Fig House wedding.
As a Los Angeles wedding planner and designer, one of the first things I do with my clients who hire me for either partial planning or design is a deep dive into the core elements of their wedding day vision. Together we explore the purpose of your gathering, so you have a sturdy foundation to build upon and fall back on when overwhelm and decision paralysis pop up. Whenever making decisions, we always refer back to this foundation to make sure we are honoring the purpose of your wedding day.
For Lily and Jim, they shared it was important to create a space that welcomed their guests in to be part of their story. While also allowing them intimate moments where they could step away from it all. The ambiance of their event was geared towards everyone having fun, and feeling comfortable within the small group. And always doing everything from a place of intentionality, not just because that’s what people usually do at weddings. So we explored every angle – together!
A huge piece of inspiration they found was their venue! As for most couples, this was the first vendor we worked on booking. It was so important for them to find a space that felt right. They shared, “The bright colors of The Fig House inspired us to not adhere to a specific color scheme, but embrace colorfulness in general. Having that direction led us to choices that (in Marie Kondo parlance) sparked joy, rather than fit a certain image of what a wedding “should” be. And if there was anything we got stuck on, we could always turn to Sarah to help us brainstorm ideas, explore different avenues, and narrow down options.”
For their ceremony at The Fig House, they welcomed many Jewish traditions like signing a Ketubah, standing underneath a chuppah, sharing wine from a Kiddush cup, and stomping the glass. These pieces of their day became meaningful because they included traditions that resonated with the couple and honored both of their backgrounds.
One moment that stood out to me during their ceremony was when it came time for their vows. They did something so unique I had never seen before and it was based on something that had been a pillar of their relationship. “Dungeons & Dragons has been really important to us throughout our relationship, so we decided to roll dice during the ceremony to determine who would say their vows first” Lily shared.
“The first look and ceremony vows were the most special and emotional moments”, they recalled of their wedding day. Creating a meaningful and intentional wedding ceremony is a top priority for so many couples, and is a beautiful way to welcome your guests into the day.
Incorporating details with meaning into their small wedding was a wonderful project of exploration together. From the bright colorful florals that adorned the ceremony chuppah to the small statement bud vases lining the reception tablescape. These elements reflected Lily and Jim’s bright and playful spirits that their friends and family are so fond of.
“We also sprinkled figurines of our favorite [D&D] characters throughout the venue, and chose music from some beloved video games to feature during the ceremony and reception. It made the day feel really unique and personal.” Having such fun and whimsical nods to an activity they are known for was perfect, and never pulled focus from the purpose or foundation of the gathering.
They also did something I had never seen done before at a wedding reception!
With such a small, select group of friends and family attending their wedding, Lily and Jim knew they could choose to do things that would align with the unique group’s personalities and relationships. And one thing many of them really love is karaoke! So instead of the traditional reception dance party, they threw a karaoke party after dinner. The group enthusiastically embraced this activity, and wow did they absolutely bring their A-game.
Working with Lily and Jim on their Fig House wedding was an amazing collaborative project, so I asked them – What advice would you give to future couples planning their wedding?
“If something comes up during the planning process that feels unimportant or forced, don’t bother with it. Who cares! Dropping all the extra stuff that we didn’t care about made it extra clear to us what we did care about, and then we could invest more time and attention (and money!) on what was most important. Design a wedding that is meaningful to you.
Planning a wedding can be an intense time. Opt for choices that will reduce your stress, like hiring a planner who can keep you calm, organized, and feeling in control.”
